Saint Maximilian Kolbe is one of five Saints painted for a private commission.

This artwork depicts the two crowns offered him in a vision early in life (martyrdom and purity); the first edition of the magazine he started, Knights of the Immaculata, which reached a circulation of 1,000,000 per month; and the badge the Nazis forced him to wear in Auschwitz, where he volunteered to take the place of a man randomly chosen to be executed, who because of St. Kolbe’s sacrifice survived World War II and got to see his wife again.
