St. John Paul the Great is taken from a larger sanctuary mural commissioned by Fr. Chris Axline for St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Gilbert, Arizona. The original work is approximately 30 feet high and 90 feet wide and depicts the angels and saints adoring Christ on the Cross. Surrounded by the blessed seraphim and flanked by Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the central figure of Christ evokes the gravity of Christ as King of the Universe, yet the tenderness of He who offered the sacrifice of his life on the cross as High Priest for the salvation of the world.
