The Sacred Heart of Jesus & Immaculate Heart of Mary, each measuring 9 x 12 inches, were a private commission, by a young man for his betrothed. Painted in the iconographic style, the pieces convey a more modern sense of familiarity and personal warmth. The figures clothed in traditional blue and red, in the case of Christ, signify the union of a divine and human nature, and in Mary, purity and passion and radiant love. The employment of a generous gold leaf background is further reference to the iconographic style, a representation of Divine Light.
